West Indies Gain Momentum with Rankings Rise Before T20 World Cup

In preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup, the West Indies team has made significant advancements in the Men’s T20I Team Rankings by moving up to fourth place following a decisive 3-0 series victory over South Africa. The co-hosts showcased their prowess despite missing key players, proving their potential as contenders.

This recent victory propels West Indies to 254 rating points, positioning them just behind the top cricketing nations. India leads the rankings with 264 points, followed by Australia at 257 and England, who are tied with the West Indies but ahead on decimal points.

The success also shone a spotlight on individual performances, which saw considerable improvements in the Men’s T20I Batting and Bowling Rankings. Brandon King, the stand-in captain, was a standout player, amassing 159 runs in the series, which elevated him five places to eighth in the batting rankings. His teammate, Johnson Charles, made a significant leap, moving up 17 places to the 20th position after a stunning innings in the series finale. Kyle Mayers and Gudakesh Motie also climbed the rankings to 31st in batting and 27th in bowling, respectively.

These advancements are timely as the West Indies aim for an unprecedented third T20 World Cup title. They find themselves in Group C with Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda, commencing their campaign against Papua New Guinea in Guyana on June 2. The rise in rankings and recent form augur well for the West Indies, setting the stage for what could be a historic performance on home soil.
