The location of India’s World Cup semifinal, whether it will be in Kolkata or Mumbai, hinges on the identity of their opponent.

India has become the first team to secure a spot in the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinals. As the undefeated leaders in the tournament’s group stage, the host nation is at the top of the points table.

However, despite their confirmed position, the exact location of Rohit Sharma and his team’s semifinal match remains uncertain. According to the tournament format, the top-ranked team is typically set to play against the fourth-ranked side in the first semifinal, which is planned for Mumbai. However, this arrangement changes if Pakistan is among the four semifinalists.

In response to security concerns raised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the ICC and BCCI had previously agreed that if Pakistan reaches the semifinals, their match will be played in Kolkata, regardless of their rank on the points table. Normally, the Eden Gardens was designated to host the second semifinal, while the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was scheduled for the first. However, if India and Pakistan occupy the first and fourth positions, respectively, the venues for these semifinals will be swapped, with Kolkata hosting the first semifinal. It’s important to note that there is no official confirmation yet regarding the scheduling of the India vs. Pakistan semifinal if the latter qualifies.

The PCB had requested that none of Pakistan’s matches be held in Mumbai, and as a result, they played their group stage matches in five different venues across the World Cup: Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata.
